Myth: Christians are to be “Salt and light” (Matthew 5:13-14) therefore should participate in government to help make the world a better place.
Answer: Christians should not attempt to make the world a better place through worldly politics. Rather they preach and introduce citizenship into another kingdom that influences the world for good through an entirely different politic.
Myth: Christians should vote and participate in government because they should have “Faith that Works”.
Answer: Christians don’t need to participate in worldly government to have faith that works. True Christians don’t just sit on the sidelines and let the world deteriorate! They bring real change through bringing the gospel of the Kingdom!
Christ’s Kingdom is Not of This World
John 18:36–37 (NKJV)
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”
37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”
Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
Excellent Resources
The Kingdom That Turned the World Upsidedown by David Bercot is an excellent book on this subject. I highly recommend it!
Matthew 6:10 (NKJV)
In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
God bless you as you consider the implications of what the kingdom could look like in your community.
